Why not accept .docx directly?

A .docx is a package of XML rather than a page, so a table that looks like a schedule on screen can arrive in an order that has little to do with what you saw. Reading the rendered page is more accurate, and Word already renders it for you when it exports a PDF.

Will exporting to PDF change my document?

No. The export writes a new file alongside the original and leaves the .docx exactly as it was.

What about Google Docs or Pages?

The same route. In Google Docs: File, then Download, then PDF Document. Pages on a Mac exports to PDF the same way. Upload the PDF that comes out.
